Lucy and Grenda – Mira Liu

By Mira Liu, Class of 2028, Honorable Mention of “The Roar”‘s Middle School Fall Writing Contest!

Lucy and Grenda

The wind blows,
through the branches,
of the family tree,
it rattles the leaves,
and takes with it,
Lucy and Grenda.

Two souls,
on the breeze,
the only thing,
that is left behind,
is a memory,
and grief,
oh, so much grief.

Crying,
sobbing,
tearing at fabric,
that is untearable,
trying to bend hourglasses,
that are invulnerable,
crying,
crying,
crying,
for Lucy and Grenda.

Fall is upon us,
the leaves fall,
to the ground,
just like two souls,
fell from the tree,
so many years ago.

Lucy and Grenda,
once two girls,
now, two pictures,
two names,
two tombstones,
two memories.

The wind blows,
through my hair,
taking with it,
the memories,
of Lucy and Grenda,
now they are gone,
forever.

Orange and red,
the color of leaves,
on the ground,
the color of Lucy’s toys,
the color of Grenda’s clothes,
now in a storage closet,
locked away,
like Lucy and Grenda.

The crunching of leaves,
sharp and crisp,
in the cool air,
Lucy loved leaves,
Grenda loved the cool breeze,
the same breeze that swept her away,
I wonder where they are now.

I pray,
that Lucy and Grenda are happy,
that they are safe,
that they never have to suffer,
that they will see fall again.

Fall,
has a new meaning,
it means new beginnings,
it means being happy,
it means reflecting,
it means

Lucy and Grenda.

I miss you.
