Social Harmony Through Dance

Dance has always been a testament to time and a force joining society together. Representations of dance are present in the ancient cave paintings and cultural artifacts. In fact, dance continues to pervade modern festivals and celebrations; whether we engage in a dance battle or perform on a big stage, we enjoy watching others dance and often dance ourselves. This is evident in Ed People’s video that covers diverse dance moves from ordinary people on the streets.

Due to dance’s transformative potential in understanding communities, it also aids in fulfilling community needs, serving as a tool to raise money for important causes through creative performances. Inspired by walk-a-thons and marathons, dance-a-thons raise funds for organizations such as colleges, animal shelters, community food banks, etc. Not only do dance-a-thons build stamina and stability, but they also can allow free expression out of one’s comfort zone and improve one’s confidence. However, some dance marathons are intense, lasting a few days at most. Allowing people from the audience to join dance challenges can foster community resilience.

What if we wanted to design dance events for specific themes? In dance academies and schools, dance recitals typically have a theme, but the twist is that dance can narrate the story the cause conveys. Organizations like Children’s Miracle Network, as well as multiple colleges, have raised money for various causes through dance performances. One of the organizations called Movement Exchange raises money for important causes and teaches marginalized community members fun dance techniques.

Our school is already doing this! An example at the end of this February is Noche de Salsa or Salsa Night, which uses salsa and Zumba for Spanish classes to display cultural appreciation and contribute to Nature Conservancy in Latin America.
