Water.

That was all there was, surrounding her—suffocating and endless, pressing against her from every direction, filling her ears with silence. It felt as though she had been here forever, a tiny speck in the vast, restless ocean.

She scanned her surroundings blearily. There was no up, no down, and certainly no sense of any other direction. Just endless, enveloping water. But strangely, she didn’t feel the urgency to swim or rise to the surface. She let herself be carried by the current, as if waiting for something or someone to pull her from these depths.

It was cold, and it was dark. Her skin broke out in goosebumps, the hairs prickling like tiny alarms. Alarms against what, she didn’t know. The chill seemed to seep into her very bones, a clawing cold that seemed to permeate her very being. It was oppressive, wrapping around her like unseen hands, pressing on her chest and making each breath feel shallow and strained.

The water was freezing, but to her, it was strangely warm in a way. It was almost comforting. She could barely see anything in the murky darkness that stretched out as far as she could see, and her surroundings felt empty even though there was water all around her.

She exhaled and watched as her breath escaped in shimmering bubbles that danced upwards, only to be popped as they tried to reach whatever surface there was.

As she drifted, fragments of cold memories flashed through her mind.

Her mother.

“I’m your mother, stop talking back to me.” “i’ll shut up now”

“What can you do better to improve next time?” “i tried my best, i swear”

“Do you ever think of anyone besides yourself?” “…”

“This is all your fault!” “i’m sorry”

Medea, her “best friend.”

“You’re the only one I can trust.” “i’m glad i have a friend again”

“Stop overreacting. That was in the past. Why can’t you just let it go?” “i should stop fussing over things long past”

“Why are you being so sensitive?” “i should shut up”

“I never said that.” “my memory’s been so bad these days”

“You know, I really think that you’re trying to push me away.” “i’m being such a bad friend”

“No one would care if you were gone.” “maybe the world would be better without me”

She was snapped out of the memories when a pair of arms embraced her from behind. It made her feel safe and whole, as if a deep-rooted emptiness that had quietly gnawed at her for so long had finally been filled-

-and then she heard Binah’s voice, tugging at the edges of her consciousness. She closed her eyes for the last time, surrendering and letting go. The world did not need her. “I only wanted-”

And thus, the mortal host was no more.
