A new virus called the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) has been identified as the cause of a disease outbreak that began in China. The disease is called COVID-19. It has spread to 29 countries around the world and 1 international conveyance (the “Diamond Princess” cruise ship currently harbored in Yokohama, Japan). Among 71,450 cases, 1,776 have died and11,326 are in critical condition. The severity of the new coronavirus symptoms can range from very mild to severe, even death. Common symptoms include fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In severe cases, the infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure, and even death. Majority of people with severe illness have been of older age or have had other significant existing medical conditions. Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted between animals and people. Research indicates that the virus originated in bats and spreads from person-to-person. Regular hand washing, covering mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, and thoroughly cooking meat and eggs can minimalize the spread of the virus.
